BASKETBALL SOUTH EAST LEAGUES

BASKETBALL SOUTH EAST LEAGUES

Opportunities to play competitive basketball in the South East have been historically difficult for some clubs who don’t live in or around the main centres. For most this has meant that they have had to enter directly into the NBL | Basketball England which isn’t always the right option. Some teams are able to thrive, whereas others, for beginner girls teams in particular, really struggle against some of the more experienced club sides. This is no fun for anyone, with the winners not being challenged and the losing team feeling demoralised.

The Basketball South East Leagues were established in November 2022 as a result of demand from our clubs to do the best for their players. It started small with Under 12 Leagues for Boys and Girls and an Under 14 Boys League with eighteen teams in total playing competitive basketball for the first time. In addition to this, six clubs played their first Primary aged competition for boys and girls and this continues to grow in popularity. An offshoot of the ‘Primary Mixed’ is a series of girls only events.

Perhaps the best thing about the Basketball South East Leagues, is the ethos and ‘feel’ that has developed with everyone that is involved. Everyone lives and breathes the fact that we are ALL learning. The players, coaches and officials are all trying to improve and they can only do that by providing an environment where people can learn from their mistakes. It has been a HUGE part of us being able to successfully grow the Basketball South East REDD programme. Long may it continue!!

The South East are also very lucky to have a number of vibrant and growing leagues and other opportunities to compete.
